Latinx / Hispanic Heritage Month Begins!

Latinx / Hispanic Heritage Month is honored and celebrated from September 15 to October 15, 2024. It’s a time to honor the rich, diverse histories and cultures of Hispanic, Latinx, and Latino-identified Americans. The Library encourages the community to attend free events (listed below) and utilize the offered resources and services to learn more about this nationally celebrated month.

  • September 15 through October 15, 2024: Take and Make Craft: Ojo de Dios, Livermore Public Libraries. Pick up a free Take & Make bag featuring Ojo de Dios. Participants will create their own Ojo de Dios as they learn about the artistic and cultural history of the craft. This craft is designed for ages 5 and up, while supplies last.
  • September 12, 2024, at 7 PM: Meet-and-Greet and Q & A with Livermore Latina Winemaker Rosa Fierro (Fierro Cellars), Civic Center Library. Join us for an evening with Latina Winemaker Rosa Fierro, owner of Fierro Cellars in Livermore. Rosa founded the winery in 2014 and has been involved in every aspect of the winemaking process, from choosing and harvesting grapes to running the tasting room. Fierro Cellars is a 100% Hispanic woman-owned winery that specializes in hand-crafted, limited production wines from the Livermore Valley. Come and be inspired by her story!
  • September 20, 2024, at 3:30 PM: Horchata Making Workshop, Rincon Branch Library. Learn to make the traditional Mexican drink Horchata. Registration is required for this event, call 925-373-5505 to register.
  • September 21, 2024, at 1 PM: Cultura Poetry & Art Fest with La Raíz Magazine, Civic Center Library. Write poetry, share your own poetry, listen to bilingual poetry, and enjoy art from various artists. This family friendly event encourages literacy, community engagement, and art appreciation. La Raíz Magazine is a literary journal featuring visual art and multilingual poetry by community members, writers, and artists based in San José, California and Santa Clara County, while also welcoming creative work from the greater San Francisco Bay Area, California, and the national and international community.
  • September 27, 2024, at 3:30 PM: Llama Craft, Rincon Branch Library. Learn about these South American animals as you craft a cute llama figurine. This craft is for ages 4 and up.
  • September 28, 2024, at 2 PM: STEM Career Day program with Amigos Unidos, Civic Center Library. What do you want to be when you grow up? In honor of Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month, join us for a captivating career day at the library. Attendees will meet Lawrence Livermore National Lab employees who are member of the Amigos Unidos Hispanic Employee Resource Group. Learn about their jobs and ask them your burning questions about their work, then complete a fun hands-on science activity.
  • October 7, 2024, at 6 PM: Bomba y Plena Workshop, Rincon Branch Library. Through drumming, singing, dancing, and storytelling, children and teens can learn about Puerto Rican music and dance traditions.
  • October 8, 2024, at 4 PM: Quetzal Craft, Springtown Branch Library. Craft a quetzal bird while you learn about their importance in many Meso-American cultures.
  • October 12, 2024, at 1 PM: Herencia Guantanamera: Live the Music, Civic Center Library. Enjoy live music and dancing while learning about Herencia Guantanamera's mission to preserve, celebrate, and share the rich cultural heritage of Guantánamo, Cuba.
  • October 14, 2024, at 6 PM: Lotería, Rincon Branch Library. All ages are welcome to play Lotería and win some books as prizes.
