Write the Light Haiku Contest

Join us in celebrating Livermore’s sesquicentennial and the everlasting glow of the legendary Centennial Light—the world’s longest-burning bulb! For 125 years, this humble glow has witnessed history, scientific innovation, and the birth of a bustling community. Now it’s your turn to shine! Submit your best haiku inspired by endurance, light, and the passage of time. Let your words illuminate the story of a bulb that never sleeps.

  • Theme: Light That Never Sleeps
  • Format: Traditional haiku structure: 3 lines, 17 syllables (5-7-5)
  • Eligibility: Open to all ages and skill levels

Haiku submissions will be collected during the month of May. Submit your Haiku entry online at Haiku Contest Entry by 11:59 p.m. on May 31, 2026. Only one entry per person is allowed.

The winner will be selected by City of Livermore Poet Laureate, Peggy Schimmelman, based on the following criteria: creativity and originality, connection to theme, emotional impact and imagery. The winning haiku will be featured in a Library display case at Civic Center Library.

For more questions, please speak with Library staff at all three locations, by phone at 925-373-5505 or by email: lib@livermoreca.gov
