Twenty years after the sinking of the Titanic, Sir John Farnleigh has returned to his ancestral home. Once the black sheep of the family, banished to America as a teenager, he has now reformed and married his childhood sweetheart. But then another man arrives claiming to be the real John Farnleigh. He tells how he and another lad agreed to switch identities in the hours before the ship sank. John's tutor, now an older man, is called in to sort out the rival claims, but the evidence he brought disappears, and one of the claimants to the title is found horribly dead. Fortunately, Dr. Gideon Fell is on hand to sort through the welter of evidence. Dr. Fell's skill at explaining impossible crimes has never been excelled.

Meetings are held in person on the third Thursday of each month at 2 p.m. at Civic Center Library Board Room. Each month, the club selects and reads a mystery novel published before 1960 by Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, Rex Stout, John Dickson Carr, Erle Stanley Gardner, Ngaio Marsh, Dashiell Hammett, Ellery Queen, and other well-known authors.
