Book summary: At first it seems a simple case: Private eye Lew Archer is hired to track down a servant who stole some jewelry. The servant soon turns up dead. Her boyfriend is taken in by the police, but Archer is convinced his client's story of the stolen jewels is a front for something deeper and more dangerous. Roving from hillside mansions to the seamy side of California's Central Valley, Archer uncovers a series of terrifying secrets. A caution for readers: This story was first published in 1952, and includes a multi-racial cast with objectionable terms and stereotypes of that time.

Meetings are held in person on the third Thursday of each month at 2 p.m. at Civic Center Library Board Room. Each month, the club selects and reads a mystery novel published before 1960 by Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, Rex Stout, John Dickson Carr, Erle Stanley Gardner, Ngaio Marsh, Dashiell Hammett, Ellery Queen, and other well-known authors.
