Thursday Classic Mystery Book Club

For the February meeting, the group will read two mysteries by Erle Stanley Gardner:  “The Crooked Candle,” a Perry Mason mystery, and “Double or Quits,” written under the name A. A. Fair. Join the discussion on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. in Community Room B, Civic Center Library, 1188 S. Livermore Ave. Please note the change in meeting location for this meeting. Registration is not required to attend the meeting.

“The Crooked Candle” by Erle Stanley Gardner: When a dead body is found on a yacht that’s grounded in the mud, there’s no shortage of suspects. Is the killer the reclusive financier? The smooth-tongued salesman? The rough-hewn Italian sheepherder? The grieving widow? The widow’s gullible boyfriend? The financier’s too-clever daughter leads Perry Mason on a wild goose chase, and the lies pile up. Mason has to sort through the clues and use courtroom ingenuity to snare the culprit.

“Double or Quits” by Erle Stanley Gardner (writing as A. A. Fair): Dr. Devarest wants detectives Donald Lam and Bertha Cool to recover the jewels that were stolen from the safe in his den. It soon appears he’s more worried about something else that was stolen, but he won’t say what. Later that same night, Donald finds Devarest dead in his own garage. Was it an accident, or was it murder?
